Anyone familiar with Burleigh Muten's work knows that no matter whether it's January, May or September, it's never too late to buy her Return of the Goddess Engagement Calendar.

As the editor of The Return of The Great Goddess (Shambhala 1994), Muten has demonstrated that she can produce the most beautiful book of any given year. She began publishing the popular engagement calendars herself in 1993 and has now found Stewart, Tabori & Chang, who must be congratulated for their good taste.

While the calendar features two-page spreads that cover a week and provide astrological and lunar information as well as lines to write on, it's the poetry, prose excerpts and art that make the book worth keeping well past the end of the year.

The 1997 edition opens with a poetic dedication to the Graces written by Merlin Stone. As we spiral through the year, we are periodically nourished by poets including May Sarton, Jane Kenyon and Lucille Clifton and by prose from such as Hallie lnglehart Austin, Judy Chicago, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Donna Wilshire. The art includes photography, painting and sculpture, all of it beautiful enough to inspire us for a day, a week, a month or another year.
