Conjure. You may have heard the term before, but what exactly is it? Conjure is an old system of African American folk magic whose origins trace to slave time. It is also known as hoodoo, or rootwork and was used to bring about change. Author Moise brings over thirty five years of experience in his first book on the art of conjure. Whether you are a beginner and an experienced conjurer, the book covers the fundamentals, history, culture, principles and ethics of conjure. For those of us who aren’t able to see him in person, the book is a great alternative to absorb some of his techniques and teachings on Conjure.

The book is well written and easy to understand. The author guides you along the journey of knowledge in a way that makes you feel as you are sitting in a café next to him in New Orleans. Hoodoo Sen Moise explains not just how to do the work but also the ‘why’ behind it. Hoodoo is not a religion but rather a practice that is incorporated into your beliefs. It is working to make magickal change.

One of my favorites in the book was a section of honoring your ancestors. The author explains the importance as well as gives you the tools and explanation on how you can best connect with them. Working with our ancestors, Moise says is the foundation of the work. I feel this is a powerful message that is often overlooked on the magickal path.

The book chapters provide an anecdote with explanation behind it. Followed is the list of ingredients needed for the work and instructions on what to do. There is so much packed into this book, there is something for everyone.

I really enjoyed reading Working Conjure and exploring more on the subject of conjure. I recommend for anyone interested in learning more and adding some hoodoo or rootwork to their existing practices.
