This policy addresses the position of Facing North and its Review Circle regarding the use of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in Works submitted for our review.

  • We do not support the use of generative AI tools to produce manuscripts and other content.
  • We will not willingly review manuscripts or other content produced largely through the use of generative AI. (Note: this does not include using basic tools for checking grammar, spelling, references, etc.)
  • If we review a work that is later discovered to have been authored in large part through generative AI, we will treat it like a work of plagiarism and do all in our power to bring this to the attention of the appropriate authorities.

We ask publishers to explicitly address this issue by asking authors in the manuscript submission process:

"Did you use AI, a language model, machine learning, or similar technologies to create or assist with the creation or editing of any of the content in this submission (e.g., text, tables, figures, video)? Note: this does not include basic tools for checking grammar, spelling, references, etc.)"

We explicitly promise that our reviews are created by humans.

Facing North will monitor developments in this field and will adjust or refine this policy as appropriate.
