Its hard to imagine how different the face of alternative spirituality was in 1977 from where we are now in 2017. Not just a lack of internet, but a landscape full of yoginis and their pseudo-spirituality and easy no way to tell the charlatans from the gurus from the true teachers.
Information about techniques like meditation were based on Eastern religions, and we didn't discuss visualization at all. Then came Shakti Gawain's Creative Visualization, and our world was transformed.
Forty years and seven million people later, Ms. Gawain's is being re-released. If you don't know it or own it, now is the time to add it to your library. Much of the techniques will be familiar: she's the mother of much of what other's have created and built. But Gawan's work is (blessedly) free of mumbo-jumbo. This is work is utterly accessible, written in a warm and engaging tone.
If you know someone just getting started in alternative forms of spirituality, or interested in self-improvement without a religious framework, this is an excellent book to offer them.
Strongly recommended.
