Apparently Of Infinity has been around since 1999, but only in 2004 put out their first demo, The Essence Of Infinity. (They remian unsigned as of this review.) I had no idea who they were, or what I was about to be hearing. But I gave it a spin.
The results are mixed. Overall, they are a female-vocals heavy melodic outfit with slight influences of doom, black metal, and goth. The main singer, Alessandra Zinicola, comes across as a mix of Anneke van Giersbergen and Björk, occasionally displaying fantastic range and adding the all around ambient sound to the music. The vocals are sometimes layered over one another which actually seems to detract from her ability, which when teamed with the seemingly misplaced keyboards at times, can give parts an overall confusing sound. (The first song, The Voice Without, in particular has a strong Trans-Siberian Orchestra feel to it, despite the vocals.) Experienced guitar work and thundering bass are dominant most of the time. Oddly, there also seems to be a feeling of newness, even though these three have been working together for more than five years. It is as if they are trying to find their groove, discover it temporarily, and then lose it again.
Bottom line, they are decent. They musical ability and style more than makes up for the negatives. If you are a fan of heavy melodic metal (think Metallica’s S&M, with a female singer) you will probably like The Essence of Infinity.
