Author Vincent Higginbotham takes us on a raw journey with stories of the trauma he endured while transforming these experiences into education and practical use. There is a content warning at the beginning of the book and I wanted to share this trigger warning as well:
“This book deals with sensitive topics including molestation, suicide, child abuse, drug abuse, prostitution, conversion therapy, and homelessness. While I have done my best to portray my experiences in a tasteful and respectful manner, these subjects may be troubling for some readers and inappropriate for others. Discretion is advised.” The same page lists some nationwide hotlines for assistance.

I think it is important to note the disclaimer so anyone who is interested in the book can be prepared as the author tells his personal stories of trauma starting in his childhood. For anyone coping with similar situations, it might be hard to read or you may need to wait before purchasing if this might trigger some pain.

For those ready to take this journey with the author, the book does offer a guide on how he was able to use magick to overcome the pain and trauma endured and move forward.

The book is broken into two parts. In Part One: Laying the Foundation, included chapters are the Spirits around us, Magickal senses, There is No Wrong Way to Witch, Protect Yourself, Tarot is a tool, and Mundane work is spell work too. The chapters begin with the author’s personal story and then follow up with a discussion, journal prompt, an activity or spell, and notes on suggested reading.

In Part Two: The Pillars of Witchcraft, the chapters are To Keep Silent, To Dare, To Will, To Know, There is Magick in Gratitude, and Witchcraft Saved My Life. Just like in part one, these chapters have a personal story of the author, with follow-up discussion, activities, spells etc.

This is a great book on learning how to grow from the hardships and pain everyone endures at some level. The author helps lift you up so instead of being beaten down by these bad circumstances, the reader can learn to stand back up and keep moving forward. No matter where the reader is on their journey of a magickal path, I recommend this book to everyone as a guide for empowerment.
